- Jackie Coates - CEO, Telstra Foundation
Ten years ago, Telstra Foundation – powering Code Club Australia – launched a small coding challenge with a big ambition: to help young people around the world build digital skills and confidence.
What started with a few Scratch projects and a handful of curious kids has grown into a global movement.
🚀 The numbers say it all!
Over the past nine years:
- 275,000+ kids have participated in Moonhack
- From 69 countries
- Completing 100,000+ coding projects
- In over 40 languages
- In 2024 59% of Moonhack coders were girls
🎉 10 Years of Impact
Moonhack has helped hundreds of thousands of kids build coding skills, solve problems, and dream big. From classrooms in Sri Lanka to community centres in the Torres Strait, and classrooms in Tehran, Moonhack has become a yearly ritual of creativity, curiosity, and connection.
But it’s never just been about code. It’s about equity, access, and belonging. Giving every child the chance to say: I built this. I belong here.
And it’s even more critical in today’s AI-powered world, the skills young people build in this challenge matter more than ever. As our own Kaye North, Community Engagement manager for Code Club Australia puts it:
“It’s easy to fall into the role of a passive user, but when kids learn to code, all that changes. Coding helps young people move from consuming technology to creating with it – building the confidence to shape the digital world, not just react to it.”
💫 Why we love Moonhack
- It’s free, fun, and future-focused.
- It brings together kids from remote First Nations communities to urban classrooms in Canada, Sri Lanka, Iraq, and beyond.
- It’s powered by volunteers, teachers, parents, and Telstra people—especially our Data and Analytics community, who’ve translated projects into over 40 languages.
- It’s a platform for First Nations storytelling, like the constellation of Tagai and the Dark Emu, reimagined through code.
