- Jackie Coates - CEO, Telstra Foundation
Every year, Moonhack—a global initiative from Telstra Foundation powered through Code Club Australia invites young people from around the world to take part in a coding challenge that sparks creativity, problem-solving, and digital literacy. But behind the scenes of this global movement is a group of dedicated volunteers, the Telstra Moonhack translators.
These volunteers are not just translating words – they’re translating opportunity.
Breaking Barriers with Generosity
Language should never be a barrier to learning, especially when it comes to something as empowering as coding. Telstra’s team of translators – made up of passionate, multilingual employees – volunteer their time and skills to make Moonhack accessible in dozens of languages. From Hindi to Vietnamese, they ensure that children from all corners of the globe can participate in their native tongue.
Their generosity goes beyond the act of translation. It’s a commitment to equity in education, to inclusion in tech, and to amplifying voices that might otherwise go unheard.
Changing the Trajectory for Future Coders
When a child in Iraq, Sri Lanka, or the Philippines can access Moonhack in their own language, something powerful happens: they see themselves in tech. They begin to believe that coding isn’t just for Silicon Valley – it’s for them too.
By localising these resources, Telstra’s translators are changing the trajectory of young lives. They’re planting seeds of curiosity and confidence that can grow into careers in STEM, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
A Ripple Effect of Impact
The impact of this work is exponential. One translated project can reach many classrooms. One inspired child can go on to teach others. One act of generosity can spark a movement.
And it’s not just the young people who benefit. Telstra’s translators often describe the experience as deeply rewarding – an opportunity to give back, connect with global communities, and live out Telstra’s purpose of building a connected future where everyone can thrive.
Why coding still matters - even in an AI-driven world
As AI becomes more powerful, understanding how it works becomes even more important. Coding teaches kids how to think logically, solve problems, and create not just consume technology. It gives them the tools to shape the future, not just adapt to it. And thanks to Telstra’s translators, that future is now accessible in more languages than ever before.
A huge thank you
To every Telstra Moonhack translator: thank you. Your work is invisible to many, but its impact is immeasurable. You are not just translating code, you’re translating hope, opportunity, and a better future for young people everywhere.
